CAPTION: Leonard Shillam’s sculpture titled ‘Wallaby’ is an almost life-size sculpture in sandstone of a wallaby and will be one of the featured artworks from the more than 900 pieces held within the gallery’s permanent collection.
DURING the months of June and July the entire Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery will become a tantalising place for visitors to catch a sample of the more than 900 artworks from the Southern Downs Regional Council collection.
The exhibition, which opens today (20 June) with the official opening on June 21, is themed “Winter in the Gallery” and promises to be the coolest exhibition of the year at the hottest venue in town!
Volunteers and gallery staff will be working hard to have the exhibition placed to perfection, taking full advantage of the space available. Some have also selected their personal favourites from the collection.
Sculpture, fibre art, ceramics, paintings, etchings, photographic images and much more will grace the interior of the gallery – a bit of something for everyone’s taste.
And, by popular demand, the Trotting Guernseys have been let out of the paddock. This imposing painting by artist William Robinson gives some light relief in a serious world as the two old cows trot their way out of the frame!
Amid several amazing portraits, one of much-loved Australian artist Margaret Olley joins the ranks to stare from the gallery wall in her diminutive self-portrait.
Barbara Schey’s fantastic fibre art titled Jacket for Dreaming of the Bush combines exquisite detail and delicacy in an easily recognisable form.
Minute ceramic and porcelain bowls, handsome and intriguing sculptures, historic photographic images and fabric pieces crafted into amazing works of art will all emerge from the depths of the gallery to take up temporary residence upstairs and awaken in the light of day.
Definitely an exhibition not to be missed.
Gallery opening hours are from 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 1pm Saturday and Sunday.
