Grant to preserve heritage

Stanthorpe Heritage Museum was awarded a $5300 Community Heritage Grant.

STANTHORPE Heritage Museum has received a boost after being awarded a $5300 federal Community Heritage Grant.
John Cowburn from Stanthorpe Historical Society attended a three-day intensive preservation and collection management workshop at the National Library, the National Archives of Australia, the National Museum of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra.
John said the grant was important in supporting the effort to preserve the Stanthorpe Heritage Museum’s collection at the grassroots level.
“While the grant provides the funds, the workshop offers the expertise to help us protect our collection and make it accessible while it remains in the local context,” he said.
“The grant will allow society members and volunteers to assist in the documentation of the collection whilst also allowing for specialist assessments to be undertaken.”
Works will commence immediately and will run over the next 12 months.
Anyone interested in helping or in becoming a Historical Society member should contact the museum at 12 High Street, Stanthorpe, or by phone on 4681 1711.
The Community Heritage Grant is managed by the National Library. It is funded by the Australian Government through the Ministry for the Arts, The National Archives of Australia, the National Film and Sound Archive, the National Museum of Australia and the National Library.
This year, grants worth $438,710 have been distributed to 75 community groups and organisations from around Australia to assist in the identification and preservation of community owned but nationally significant heritage collections.
