STANTHORPE won’t have to wait another 30 years for snow with the announcement that Snowflakes in Stanthorpe will be on in early July next year.
Stanthorpe Agricultural Society president Andy Williams announced at a Chamber of Commerce meeting that the event would be bigger and better in 2016.
“I would like to officially announce that Stanthorpe will definitely have snow in early July 2016,” Mr Williams said.
“The original concept from 2013 will be further developed and will see events rolled out over three days, at locations such as, but not limited to the Stanthorpe showgrounds, the main street, and along the banks of Quart Pot Creek.”
The announcement was made with the Stanthorpe Agricultural Society, Stanthorpe Chamber of Commerce, Destination Southern Downs and sponsors already on board.
It is set to kick-off for three days starting on 1 July next year, with Suncorp Bank and Stanthorpe McDonalds already signed up as sponsors.
“This has the potential to be a winter festival celebration that will be special and exciting, and will include activities such as a snow-making machine, an ice rink, tobogganing, street entertainment, street markets, music food, fireworks and more,” Mr Williams said.
“Two years ago when this event first kicked off, the anticipated crowd of 300 turned into 3000.”
Mr Williams said it had the potential to put Stanthorpe on the map.
“With the appropriate project management and delivered outcomes, this vision and concept has the potential to be a major Queensland event in time. It will bring visitors and tourists from far and wide – it will showcase our wonderful community in a winter theme, and bring an economic benefit to a vast range of local businesses and community groups. It will be all about fun and engaging with our local community and values,” he said.
“I encourage you all to embrace this concept and come along and enjoy the ride.”
