THE Warwick Art Gallery has turned its attention to local youth with a series of new media workshops and an exhibition later in the year.
Gallery Director Karina Devine is looking forward to welcoming four nationally recognised media artists to Warwick to teach workshops in Film Making, Animation and Cartoon drawing.
“Improving our programming for the younger members of our community has been on our agenda for several years,” Ms Devine said.
“We wanted to provide more than just an opportunity to exhibit and developed a wish-list of tutors and new media techniques that we felt would be of interest to our younger audience.
“We were fortunate to receive funding from the Regional Arts Development Fund to support bringing specialist teachers from Brisbane and Sydney to Warwick for a program of five different workshops to be run during the September school holidays.”
DLux Media Arts are one of Australia’s longest running screen and media arts organisations and they have vast experience delivering workshops to gallery clients.
Andrew Burrell is an independent contemporary arts practitioner with strong history in real-time 3D and interactive audio installation and teaches workshops for DLux Media Arts.
Andrew’s first Warwick workshop will focus on recording material and manipulating the footage by learning to slow it down, speed it up, pause and reverse it.
Students will also learn about animation including how to create an animation using an ipad.
DLux Media Arts will provide a full lab of equipment including iPads with relevant applications on them for participants to use.
Students are also encouraged to bring along their own tablets and smartphones in case they prefer to work on their own devices.
Andrew’s second workshop will introduce Geocaching which is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices.
Brisbane-based cartoon artist Phil Judd, who specialises in teaching basic drawing concepts and enabling participants to create their own cartoon character, will also offer workshops.
Phil will offer two different cartoon drawing workshops for children aged six to 12 years and a more advanced class for participants aged 13 years and over.
Lucinda Clutterbuck from Piccolo Films is one of Australia’s foremost contemporary animators and animation producers.
Lucinda’s unique indie style animations will be the subject of her four day workshop taught in partnership with Sydney based animator and writer Lewis Argall. She has made over 20 short animations and was awarded a film-makers fellowship in 2005 by the Australian Film Commission in recognition of her skills and significant body of work.
Her animations can be viewed on her vimeo page vimeo.com/piccolofilms. Participants in the workshops aged 25 and under will be invited to exhibit work created at or inspired by the workshops at the exhibition scheduled to be held at Warwick Art Gallery in December this year.
The workshop program begins on Tuesday 22 September and the classes range in price from just $10 to $35 with most of the equipment and materials supplied.
Full details can be found on the Warwick Art Gallery website or by visiting the Gallery at 49 Albion Street, Warwick.
