THIS year, 11 November marks the 96th anniversary of the armistice which ended WWI.
For many, Remembrance Day is a time to reflect on sacrifices made by our Diggers who suffered or perished on the battlefield to secure the freedoms we take for granted today.
Ensuring the legacy of our war veterans is not forgotten, Stanthorpe couple Norm and Helen Gale along with a team of volunteers from the Stanthorpe and District Naval Sub Section will be selling Remembrance Day memorabilia in the lead-up to the day.
Mr Gale, who served with the Royal Australian Navy and is president of the Navy Sub Section, urged the local community to show their support.
“It is about keeping the memory alive and making sure our Defence Force people are looked after,” Mr Gale said.
“Proceeds go towards Defence Force welfare, to the Navy, Army and Airforce, and also local organisations.
“Last year we gave $500 to the junior soccer team for their uniforms, $500 to local disability services, and at our Coral Sea dinner we gave $500 to the hospitality kids who are going to California.”
A huge range of memorabilia will be on offer, including limited edition medallions, Great War diaries and collectable teddy bears in full regalia. Stands will be outside IGA on Davadi Street and Soul Pattinson Chemist in Maryland Street during business hours from Monday 3 November to Monday 10 November.
Centenary Fundraising Collection catalogues of all products for sale will also be available at both stands, allowing residents to secure an item not on display with a 20 per cent deposit.
