Keys for Geitz

Australian netball team captain and former Allora local Laura Geitz will be honoured with the keys to the region on 2 November.

THE Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Peter Blundell will present Commonwealth Games gold medallist and Australian netball team captain Laura Geitz with the “keys to the region” on 2 November at a special Laura Geitz celebration day.
Cr Blundell said the council wanted to hold a special event that celebrated and recognised the sporting prowess of Ms Geitz, who was born in Allora and started her netball playing days in the township.
“Laura has never forgotten her hometown and often acknowledges the local people who have helped her along the way,” he said.
“She is a gracious winner and a wonderful role model.
“Council approached Laura about a celebration day and she was happy to participate and accept the keys to the region.
“As always Laura is keen to see local family and friends and pay tribute to Allora for the support she has received.”
Cr Blundell said the key to the region would have local significance with local carpenter and wood craftsman Ken Petersen making the key and Allora resident Perry Cronin from Shark Memorabilia making the presentation casing.
“We will present the key to Laura at the Allora Sports Museum, where many of Laura’s successes and career highlights are displayed,” he said.
Council is inviting everyone to attend the celebration day, which, due to unforeseen circumstances has had to change from a morning event to an afternoon function (starting at 2pm).
“We look forward to as many people as possible attending our Laura Geitz Celebration Day,” Cr Blundell said.
It will be a history-making day, with only one other sportsperson awarded this honour in the last decade –Dean Butler for his contribution to and achievements in hockey.
