It’s popular – give you the tip

The Stanthorpe Waste Facility's new bins.

THE newly upgraded Stanthorpe Waste Facility has proved popular, with over 300 cubic metres of waste being disposed of and taken to landfill.
Southern Downs Regional Council environmental services manager Mr O’Brien said as a result of the upgrade residents can now dispose of all of their waste into the new bins, including bulky waste such as furniture, without having to go to the landfill face.
“Council would like to remind residents that disposal is free for all domestic waste, with the exception of tyres,” he said.
“Bulky waste is only to be taken to the Stanthorpe Waste Management Facility in the southern region, and not to the smaller transfer stations.”
Apart from increased capacity, recycling opportunities have also been bolstered thanks to the $554,000 upgrade.
“With the new roofing over the recycling area we’d also encourage people to separate their waste and dispose of recyclable material,” Mr O’Brien said.
The existing waste disposal area has become the recycling drop-off point, which allows the Endeavour Foundation to use more of the waste facility shed for storage of recyclables and items to be sold through the re-use shop.
The upgrade project is a joint initiative of SDRC and the State Government, with the Department of Local Government, Community Recovery and Resilience providing over $220,000.
