Hats off to our CWA ladies

Around the Traps with Lawrence Springborg MP

SOUTHERN Free Times has kindly given me the chance to let you know what I’ve been up to recently. Apart from being up to my eyeballs in doctor contracts and all things health, many of you know that regardless of my weekly schedule, I am always in the electorate on Friday and weekends. This is important to me as I continue to meet constituents and I find out first-hand what is happening around the place.
CWA 90th Killarney
LAST week, I was able to help celebrate 90 years of continued service by Killarney CWA. What an extraordinary effort and such valuable service by a wonderful group of ladies. I am a big supporter of the CWA and constantly overwhelmed by their dedication and commitment to all things rural. Even on the day, the ladies handed over a significant cheque for drought-stricken families out west. Their fund-raising never goes unnoticed and is appreciated by many. Hats off to all CWA ladies, but this week I wish to especially acknowledge the Killarney branch. Well done.
Good Luck John Neville
I ATTENDED the farewell dinner for Mr John Neville in Stanthorpe. John is leaving a marvellous gift to our community, as he retires to his Stanthorpe property. John started the Queensland College of Wine Tourism and has been its long-running CEO. It has matured and grown, like a good wine, under his leadership. We are all very grateful for his dedication and efforts over the past years as the pioneer of a successful local training entity. Our thanks extend to his time as a local teacher and principal in Stanthorpe. John, we wish you all the best in your retirement and sincerely thank you for being such a fantastic mentor to many.
Local shows
THE local shows are well underway, and it is no secret that I love the agricultural show society circuit. This year, I have enjoyed double success as a lamb producer, winning the champion pen at the Inglewood Show and Single lamb at Inglewood.
This success was repeated at the Warwick Show the following week-end, where I won the very same categories. The show is a terrific day out to see what the region has to offer and a chance to catch up with friends.
A huge congratulations to all of the volunteers and workers that make the show a community winner. I didn’t have success with my other little secret, making jam. I won the best bottle in 2013 at Inglewood Show for my fig jam, but lost this year. Of little comfort was my third for grape jam. I am already planning for next year; I might have to phone the Killarney CWA girls for a bit of help.
