MODERN and popular culture is the oblique focus of David Howard’s exhibition of 30 paintings entitled iNASA at the Warwick Art Gallery from Thursday, 18 December.
The exhibition presents a mini-narrative about contemporary civilisation and life, and is “vaguely autobiographical” said the Sunshine Coast artist.
The term ‘NASA’ acts a metaphor for Western culture, and the quirky paintings present a set of episodes where a space-suited pair face change together.
They become tribal and endangered, entangled, scared and lost, float about and fall in love in a vibrant ‘real and imagined’ landscape – all under the gaze of an intriguing third figure.
This set of paintings represents a visual and intellectual smorgasbord, combining striking graphics and complex personal iconography while directly referencing other artists, popular culture and recent history.
iNASA is sure to delight the young (and young-at-heart) with its strong graphic style and intriguing references to modern art and popular culture.
Meet the artist David Howard at a special event at Warwick Art Gallery on Friday 17 January, commencing at 6pm.
David will also be guiding children through a painting activity inspired by iNASA on Saturday 18 January, from 9.30am-12.30pm for children aged six years and over.
The workshop is $5 and must be pre booked by phoning on (07) 4661 0434 or by emailing warwickart@southerndowns.qld.gov.au.
In addition, the gallery will have free, self-directed activities for children for the duration of the exhibition throughout the school holidays.
